As part of the hospital administrative team, assists with the organization, direction, management and evaluation of Nursing Services to attain the hospital's objectives and high quality of care. Provides clinical oversight for Surgical Services (OR, PACU, Endoscopy, Cath Lab and Outpatient Surgery), Inpatient services (Med/Surg, Women’s Health, Pediatrics, L&D, Postpartum, Nursery, ICU and the ED), Homecare and Hospice, and Case Management/Utilization Review areas as well as responsibility for the delivery of nursing practice throughout the organization. The CNO will report to the Chief Executive Officer. The CNO will be responsible for program development, initiating change and cost efficient staffing. Provides leadership and direction with visibility on all shifts. Assumes Administrator on-call duties as assigned. Assists with formulating budgets and monitoring revenues and expenses. Provides coaching and mentoring to leadership staff and team building with front line staff.
Responsible for the leadership and professional development of the nursing staff.
Develops, implements, reviews and revises policies, procedures and standards to assess, evaluate and meet the needs of the patient.
Provides interpretations of hospital policies to the nursing staff, patients and community.
Implements standards of nursing practice annually reviewing and revising as necessary to reflect changes in nursing practice and to ensure safe, effective and efficient nursing care.
Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the methods used to predict number of staff members needed based on patient acuity, workload units, procedures and treatments.
Recommends modifications, additions or deletions of personnel policies and matrices to insure reasonable hours and acceptable working conditions to provide patient care coverage.
Maintains close coordination with all departments to insure continuity and collaboration of services.
Participates with management, medical staff and clinical leaders in the hospital's decision-making process.
Serves as a member of professional staff committees in matters pertaining to patient care. Encourages interactive departmental meetings and discussions.
In coordination with the Chief Financial Officer, utilizes the department managers to plan the budget requirements for personnel, performance of work, supplies and equipment.
Implements an effective, ongoing program to measure, assess and improve the quality of nursing care delivered to patients.
Each nursing department's performance improvement program interfaces with and supports the nursing department performance improvement program.
Assures that nurse managers review monthly performance improvement compliance with established indicators and sees that corrective actions are taken when negative outcomes are identified.
Effectively and consistently communicates administrative directives to personnel.
Ensures compliance with local, state, federal rules and regulations and JCAHO standards.
Prepares reports/surveys/statistics to be reported to staff, managers and Board of Trustees.
Keeps abreast of health care changes/advances that affect the hospital through conferences, professional societies and publications, seminars etc.
Resolves personnel concerns at the departmental level, utilizing the grievance process as required.
Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments and staff.
Plans and recommends to the Chief Executive Officer, new facilities, equipment or modifications needed to provide patient care.
Responsible for cost controls to ensure maximum effectiveness of funds expended from approved departmental budgets.
Demonstrates complete follow-through to resolution on patient and staff complaints.
Provides visibility and communication to all shifts via rounds and regular employee forums.
