We are seeking an Associate Director of Nursing (ADON) at Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program (BHCHP) where we are committed to delivering exceptional health services to some of our community’s most vulnerable—and most resilient—citizens.
The ADON is a valued member of the Respite Clinical Leadership Team with primary responsibility to oversee the daily clinical and administrative operations of the Medical Respite Nursing Department. Medical Respite consists of two programs; The Barbara McInnis House and the Stacy Kirkpatrick House, that encompass 124 beds for men and women experiencing homelessness who are too sick to live on the street or in a shelter.
The ADON addresses immediate operational needs of the facility, supervising and directing other members of the team to coordinate and advance positive health outcomes for patients. This person develops strong reciprocal relationships to ensure the needs of patients are addressed.
This nursing leader assists the Director of Nursing (DON) in implementing the mission and vision of BHCHP which emphasizes nursing excellence and reinforces the department’s overall philosophy, policies, procedures and guidelines while incorporating evidence-based nursing practice. In the absence of the DON, the ADON assumes that role.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Recognizes the impact of systems on health care delivery and functions across interdisciplinary teams promoting coordination, mutual respect and prompt response to patient health care needs. Facilitates development of workflows and pathways that ensure the coordination of care with particular attention to transitional needs.
Facilitates huddles, promotes and models effective, respectful communication and models team building and leadership skills. Facilitates change to respond to emerging practice and organizational needs.
Utilizes critical, creative thinking to identify and evaluate operational clinical needs to resolve concerns early and create solutions.
Manages all resources to support optimal care of respite patients, telephonically and electronically including Epic and MatrixCare.
Develops strong collaborative relationships and participates on committees and with broader organizational initiatives as required.
Demonstrates technological literacy.
Provides clinical oversight and support to RN Supervisors, Charge RNs and other staff in concert with Nursing and Medical Directors and authorizes department schedule with oversight of Respite Nursing Operations Manager and evaluates performance of RN Supervisors and Charge RNs in collaboration with the DON.
Helps select, supervise, orient and mentor staff.
Quality And Safety:
Collaborates with Quality RN, Clinical Nurse Educator, and Respite Leadership in planning any clinical training and competencies for the nursing department and setting quality standards for nursing care and in the development of relevant policies and procedures; follows and knowledgeable about Massachusetts nursing practice.
Demonstrates ability to analyze, synthesize and apply data to drive optimal care delivery outcomes.
Monitors the health of the program and assists with compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements in meeting or exceeding DPH standards.
Serves as a consultant on clinical matters, provides skilled, evidence-based direct care competently and in a culturally sensitive manner and provides oversight to the Admissions Office as needed.
Requirements may be changed to meet program needs.
Graduate of an approved school of nursing.
Commonwealth of Massachusetts RN license.
Minimum of five years nursing, leadership and management experience preferred.
Experience working with underserved population and an understanding of substance use disorders and mental illness preferred.
Independent worker with sound decision-making skills who works effectively with colleagues to make complex decisions.
Excellent communication skills and good great teammate.
Skills and Abilities:
Possess ability to lead critical issues relating to patient care and changing organizational climate.
Lifelong learner who seeks and participates in continuing education and professional training offerings to improve knowledge base, clinical skills and leadership functions.
Able to lift 5 pounds on a regular basis and 50 pounds occasionally.
Able to travel to different sites.
Able to stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs, bend and stoop.
