Vice President of Nursing for Medicine and Surgery
The Vice President of Nursing for Medicine and Surgery is responsible for leading the development, implementation and evaluation of nursing care delivery to ensure the provision of state-of-the-art, safe, evidence-based quality patient care. Responsibilities include the direct supervision of Nurse Managers and advanced practice nurses (NPs and CNSs), and collaborating with physicians and other health care team members to develop and implement approaches to care that adhere to the practice standards and external regulatory agencies. This position reports to the Chief Nursing Officer and Senior Vice President for Patient Care Services.

LEADERSHIP AND INNOVATION**
Participates with leaders from the governing bodies, medical staff, and clinical areas in developing strategic plans, budgets, resource allocation, operational plans and standards. Develops and implements plans to provide effective nursing care to patients and families. Participates in evaluating, selecting, and integrating health care technology and information management systems that support patient care needs and the efficient utilization of nurses and other personnel. Continually directs the development of organization wide patient care programs, standards and procedures that describe how patient care needs are assessed, evaluated, and met. Develops affiliations with educational institutions for the use of clinical facilities by students in nursing and allied health professions. Oversees activities related to the placement of students and provides guidance regarding curricula.
QUALITY MANAGEMENT AND THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE**
Consistently assesses patient and staff needs in order to develop and/or ensure that existing services deliver quality characteristics which meet the needs of assigned department’s customers. Consistently assesses and responds to patient satisfaction surveys and implements programs to improve satisfaction outcomes Collaborates with leaders from the governing bodies, management, medical staff, and clinical areas in planning, promoting and conducting patient care performance improvement (PI) activities. Ensures that the quality of nursing care provided by all members of the nursing staff and other assigned areas is measured, assessed, improved and evaluated in accordance with the hospital’s Performance Improvement Plan. Ensures the development of, and approves, department objectives, policies, procedures and nursing care standards which promote quality care and meet regulatory requirements from The Joint Commission, CMS, and other regulatory agencies. Establishes mechanisms which maintain a safe, healthy environment for patients and employees. Initiates, promotes and participates in research assessing the quality, efficiency and cost effectiveness of nursing care.
HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT/ LEADERSHIP AND STAFF DEVELOPMENT**
Consistently engages the work force of assigned departments fostering participation in unit / department planning and problem-solving processes. Ensures that criteria-based performance evaluations are conducted at the appropriate intervals. Provides education, motivating challenges, recognition and rewards which promote the professional development of the department leaders and staff. Develops and interprets policies and standards which support patient care, promote excellence, and attract, develop and retain qualified personnel. Communicates with staff Managers and Directors in a constructive manner. Responds promptly to problems or concerns with sensitivity and appropriate action. Participates in the negotiation of collective bargaining agreements. Responsible for the orientation of newly hired Directors and Managers. Supports patient and staff rights to fair and equitable treatment, self-determination, individuality, privacy and right to waive a complaint.
RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS/TEAMWORK **
Collaborates with the Department Chairman, Chiefs of Service, Medical Directors and other members of the medical staff to provide patient care and other services that support high quality patient care. Consistently demonstrates positive interpersonal relations with all constituencies; cooperates harmoniously with others in the accomplishment of the institution’s strategic goals and objectives. Demonstrates effectiveness in assisting the Chief Nursing Officer with the implementation of effective communication mechanisms among all departments and service, unions, the medical staff and administration. Serves on various committees as appropriate. Demonstrate the ability to effectively represent the hospital at state and local meetings, conferences, conventions and community affairs.
BUDGET AND FISCAL RESPONSIBILITIES*
Plans, implements and monitors the operating budget. Reviews and evaluates the department’s work force and makes recommendations for change to the Chief Nursing Officer
The Ideal Candidate
The Vice President of Nursing for Medicine and Surgery should bring a mix of experience, talent, style and values that will enable them to succeed in a complex, diverse, environment and assist in maintaining its status as a leading healthcare provider. An ideal candidate will also bring the following professional experience and personal qualities to this important role: Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees required, with at least one degree in nursing. A doctorate is preferred. Minimum of 12 years of nursing experience with 8 years of progressive leadership responsibility Demonstrates competency in nursing practice, administration, financial management, and personnel management. Knowledge of labor relations, economics and legislation.
