Job Summary: Directs operations for the in-patient nursing units (MSU, PCU, ICU, L&D, NICU) as well as services provided to the facility by the House Supervision department. Provides administrative direction and support in conjunction with the Director of Medical Staff Affairs for the Hospitalist Advanced Practitioner Group. Consults with staff, providers, other members of leadership, and CNO on patient care matters and interpretation of facility policies and procedures to ensure needs are met. Directs performance improvement activities across the division, within the departments, and participates in CQI initiatives. Fosters an environment of collaboration and respect with physician colleagues, nurses and other healthcare team members.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Organizes programs, policies and procedures which are developed to serve the Mission, Vision, Values, and Strategic Direction of KRMC.
Implements standards of nursing practice, reviewing and revising as necessary to reflect changes in nursing practice and the people served.
Assumes 24/7 accountability for the direction of appropriate patient placement and provisioning of nursing and support resources across the division.
Directs coordination of units in order maximize productivity and minimize costs.
Accountable for the efficient delivery of in-patient care by directing the development, evaluation, and utilization of safe, cost effective, high quality nursing practices.
Directs acute care nursing operations to achieve quality improvement, fiscal productivity and patient satisfaction goals/objectives.
Acts as a liaison with patients, physicians and employees to ensure high-quality patient care.
Addresses and supports cultural practices as long as the practices do not harm others or interfere with the planned course of medical care.
Develops, communicates and implements policies and procedures and monitors compliance.
Uses findings from patient satisfaction survey with input from the managers and staff to establish unit based customer service initiatives.
Assures that clear, concise and current written policies and procedures are available to assist the staff and minimize risk factors.
Recommends modifications, additions or deletions to nursing staffing plans across the division to ensure reasonable hours and acceptable working conditions to provide optimal patient care coverage.
Maintains close coordination of the acute care nursing departments in alignment with all other departments of KRMC to insure continuity and collaboration of services.
Assures that all aspects of patient care occur in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
Develops and approves job descriptions within the scope of responsibility.
Effectively leads and administers the performance appraisal system across the nursing services division.
Gives routine performance feedback, conducts annual performance reviews for management personnel, and works in collaboration with HR and the senior leadership team to ensure the reward and recognition system is competitive.
Directs, along with Human Resources, effective resolution related to employee and labor management issues.
Builds and leads a culture of teamwork and respect throughout the division, engaging effectively with all stakeholders, e.g. physicians, staff, outside contractors, and the people served.
Provides leadership and mentorship in the development of division nursing leaders and staff.
Responsible for cost controls to insure effective use of funds expended from approved division departmental budgets.
Initiates and supports problem-solving groups that proactively resolve issues within nursing services.
Assumes the responsibility of the CNO along with other members of the senior leadership team in their absence.
Participates with the Governing Body, management, medical staff and clinical leaders in the hospital's decision-making process:
Plans and recommends to CNO, new facilities or equipment or modifications thereto needed to provide patient care.
Serves as a member of professional staff committees in matters pertaining to patient care.
Participates in Leadership, Nursing, and medical staff departmental meetings.
Plans and coordinates budgeting requirements with the CNO and CFO, utilizing the respective service managers for personnel, performance of work, supplies and equipment.
Oversees division departmental budgets, providing leadership to managers in preparing variance reports as appropriate.
Implements an effective, ongoing program to measure, assess and improve the quality of nursing care delivered to patients:
Each department's performance improvement program interfaces with and supports the overall Nursing Services/organization wide performance improvement program.
The results of each department's performance improvement activities are reported to the respective hospital medical staff committees and to the organization wide performance improvement committee.
Assures that division nursing leaders review monthly performance improvement activities with established indicators and sees that corrective actions are taken when underperformance is identified.
Collaborates with hospital leaders in developing, implementing, reviewing, revising and monitoring organization wide performance improvement activities, including infection control.
Exercises divisional authority over those associated with providing clinical nursing care, treatment and services.
Responsible for the patient experience with services provided.
Responds to operational issues affecting the delivery of timely, efficient, and quality patient care services to patients in a timely fashion.
Compliance with Regulations:
Ensures compliance with regulations governing the Hospital and rules of accrediting bodies, by maintaining extensive knowledge of the requirements and by continually monitoring the activities and processes tied to each standard.
In collaboration with the management team, implements and/or revises policies, and procedures to maintain compliance with Federal and State laws and regulations.
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Current license by the state of Nebraska as a registered nurse.
A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required; Master’s Degree in Nursing or Healthcare Management preferred.
A minimum 8 years total acute care nursing experience required; with a minimum of three of those 8 years in hospital management required.
