REPORTS TO: President, UPMC-East

COMPANY: UPMC East is a nonprofit, 155-bed acute-care hospital located in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, an eastern suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, located in Allegheny County. Operating since July 2012, UPMC East is a new, state-of-the-art hospital that delivers a full range of quality medical services to Pittsburgh eastern communities. Since opening, UPMC East has created more than 800 jobs, provided residents access to UPMC’s nationally renowned medical services without traveling out of area, and has committed to developing a new suite of community-oriented programs and services that will provide health education for residents in the area.

SUMMARY: The Chief Nursing Officer provides executive administrative and operational oversight and strategic vision for all nursing at UPMC East. This position is expected to maintain the highest standards other staff members can follow and create a culture of excellence in service to patient care and trust. Additionally, this role is responsible for developing collaborative relationships with the Board of Directors, Senior Management, private physicians, and other stakeholders internally and externally. Represent the nursing component and participate with other stakeholders in planning, promoting, and conducting organization-wide performance improvement activities.
·Be an interactive, transformative leader for all nursing practice at UPMC East; be a mentor and influencer that will contribute to a culture and environment of high quality standards; assures that nursing practice and patient plan care is compliant with government regulations and mirrors UPMC’s mission, vision, and core values.
·Manage clinical and financial operations for nursing and patience care; promote fiscal responsibility by using performance measures for operations and work with department management to assure efficient and effective delivery of services; engage all leaders and staff to achieve excellence in clinical and customer service quality; and report results to the hospital President.
·Build trusting collaborative relationships with internal and external hospital stakeholders to include physicians, vendors, community leaders, legislators, and educational programs; facilitate the growth and development of the Patient Care division within the system and the community; and integrate evidence-based practice and research opportunities related to changes in practice into the operational infra-structure of the organization.
·Be proactive in activities to develop and achieve strategic goals of UPMC East and UPMC Health System; endorse strategic plans/goals to leaders and staff and solicit feedback.
·Dedicated to address complex, high-risk problems and translate them into opportunities and challenges; always be diligent to improve or resolve issues.
·Oversees the Professional Practice Council supporting a shared governance model.
·Manages workforce planning including staffing pattern, skill mix, employment decisions, and current/future needs and skill sets; develop pathways for mentorship and continuing education.
·Foster an environment in which the nurses and other staff are given opportunities for community involvement are rewarded for excellence; listens first, creates transparency in communications, confronts reality, and clarifies expectations.
·Champion dignity and respect; mentor staff on cultural diversity and competency to promote inclusion and recognition of differences in staff, physicians, patients, and communities; and provide a safe pathway to address workplace horizontal violence.
·Display an understanding of the hospital's insurance payor mix, CMI, and the corresponding impact on LOS, readmission rates and individual/global treatment course for patients
·Utilize hospital and system databases, decision support, and expert programs to plan for patient care processes and systems; explain and utilize metrics for any process and links metrics with goals as well as national quality initiatives/metrics; and oversees the various data submission for public reporting.
·Identify and be responsive to changes in process improvement based on risk/liabilities, clinical findings, and team recommendations; promote cost efficient quality outcomes.
·Pursues sharing through publication, presentation and exchange of best practices to increase exposure to innovative solutions and positive change.
SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:
·Excellent leadership, interpersonal, communication, planning, organizing, and problem-solving skills.
·Strong drive and motivation.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
·Bachelor of Science in Nursing required.
·Master’s degree in Nursing or related health care field required; PhD in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice preferred.
·5 years’ of progressive experience in nursing management and experience in managing diverse functions are required.
·Must be flexible and willing to work varying hours.
