Mercy Health Network (MHN) is an integrated system of hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare facilities dedicated to delivering outstanding healthcare services and improving the health of people throughout Iowa and the surrounding areas. MHN was founded in 1998 under a joint operating agreement between Catholic Health Initiatives, based in Englewood, Colorado, and Trinity Health, based in Livonia, Michigan, two of the country’s largest Catholic, not-for-profit health organizations. MHN is comprised of numerous regional markets (including Des Moines, Clinton, North Iowa, Dubuque, Iowa City, and Sioux City) and has more than 3,200 licensed hospital beds and 17,000 employees. Under the joint operating agreement, MMC Des Moines is an asset of Catholic Health Initiatives and is the flagship and the largest hospital in the MHN, Des Moines regional market with 656 licensed and 553 staffed beds.
Patient Care Services and in particular, Nursing, at MMC Des Moines has been stagnant for many years, and the time for dramatic change is now. The Chief Nursing Officer for MMC, Des Moines is a key leadership position for the organization and the successful candidate will be an individual with the knowledge, skills, style and mindset to have significant impact on the organization within and beyond patient care services. The Chief Nursing Officer will oversee a budget of $87M. The successful candidate for this role will be an individual excited about the future of patient care delivery and the future role of nursing in new models for care. S/he will be an inspirational leader in that s/he will be able to capture the hearts and minds of an entire generation of millennial care givers, hold people accountable, change culture and utilize out-of-the-box thinking to design non-traditional staffing models and care teams. S/he will be an aspirational leader in that s/he yearns for a larger and broader leadership role in the future, including a role that spans beyond a single hospital or patient care services. The individual selected for this position will, at least in part, be selected based on his/her potential to assume succession planning opportunities and the perceived potential to take on broader responsibilities in the future. The following qualifications and experiences are essential in the role:
Master’s or Post Graduate Degree is required. Doctor of Nursing Practice or the willingness to pursue DNP is highly desirable.
Minimum 5-7 years in a senior level nursing position within a system or large hospital with experience in matrix level leadership structures. Experience at the VP/CNO level is desirable but not required.
Strong knowledge of nursing practice and systems framework, excellent strategic thinking skills, strong financial and business acumen skills with demonstrated resource management and stewardship skills.
Strong abilities in continuous quality improvement concepts or LEAN Six Sigma.
Certification as a nurse executive advanced by ANCC and/or AONE.
High EQ with the demonstrated ability to engage staff and leaders across the organization in a significant culture change. Strong and finely-honed change management skills with certification in facilitation preferred.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a diverse and multi-cultural environment.
