WittKieffer is proud to partner with UAB Medicine in their search for the inaugural System Chief Nursing Executive (CNE). Headquartered in Birmingham, UAB Medicine, Alabama’s largest and most comprehensive academic health system, seeks an accomplished, dynamic, and distinguished executive to lead nursing strategy at one of the nation’s most respected healthcare institutions. This new role will be key to the organization's success as it continues to grow and expand as a system, providing nursing excellence and leading activities operationally, financially, and culturally.
UAB Medicine is the largest academic medical center in Alabama and one of the top four largest academic medical centers in the United States. In 2024, St. Vincent’s Health System was acquired by UAB Health System and officially became UAB St. Vincent’s, adding five hospitals. This newly formed CNE role will serve as the senior-most nursing leader for the system. As a six-time designated Magnet organization, nursing excellence is the standard of professional nursing. This executive will set the strategic direction for nursing services across UAB Medicine, including the integration of the five newly acquired hospitals, the standardization of clinical practices, and the cultivation of a culture rooted in collaboration, innovation, and accountability.
The ideal candidate will be a seasoned and visionary nursing executive with a strong background in nursing administration, operational excellence, and strategic leadership. They will bring a proven ability to drive financial and operational success, and experience leading organizations where continuous improvement is embedded in the culture. Skilled in fostering inclusive, collaborative environments, they will bring innovative approaches to workforce recruitment and retention while upholding the highest standards of clinical care. A master’s degree in nursing, with a strong preference for a doctoral degree, qualifying them for an academic appointment in the UAB School of Nursing, is required as well as working knowledge of Magnet criteria and principles strongly preferred.
