Community Memorial Hospital (CMH) is a 25-bed Critical Access Hospital and the healthcare anchor of Madison County, serving approximately 45,000 residents across Central New York. Interim Chief Nursing Officer (Immediate Need)
An experienced nurse executive is needed to provide immediate, stabilizing nursing leadership during a leadership transition, while a permanent CNO search is underway. This is a high-impact engagement with real authority — leading nursing operations, maintaining regulatory and survey readiness, supporting a tenured leadership team, and assessing departmental needs to set the permanent CNO up for success.
Compensation: $100–$150 per hour (commensurate with experience). Relocation costs negotiable.
Duration: Approximately 4–6 months. On-site in Hamilton, NY; available to start promptly.
Ideal background: Seasoned CNO or senior nurse executive with hospital nursing-leadership experience; New York or other highly regulated state regulatory experience strongly preferred; comfortable leading a small, tenured team through transition with a steady, collaborative approach. Critical Access / rural / community and unionized-environment experience are advantages.
Permanent CNO
A true executive leadership seat where nursing leadership directly shapes patient care, quality, and culture, in close partnership with the CEO and CMO. We welcome accomplished nurse leaders ready for the chief role — including strong Directors and Senior Directors of Nursing seeking the next step.
Compensation: $190,000–$210,000 base, plus sign-on and relocation support. Relocation costs negotiable.
Key Responsibilities
Provide executive leadership for all nursing and clinical services across Med/Surg, Special Care, ED, OR, and Ambulatory.
Lead, mentor, and develop an experienced nursing leadership team, strengthening accountability while honoring CMH’s collaborative culture.
Serve as a trusted clinical partner to the CEO and CMO and contribute to organization-wide strategy.
Own nursing practice excellence and regulatory/accreditation readiness (The Joint Commission, CMS, NYS DOH).
Oversee nursing workforce planning, staffing, and budget; partner effectively within a unionized environment.
Qualifications
Active NY RN license (or eligibility to obtain prior to start); BSN required, graduate degree preferred.
Progressive nursing leadership experience (Director, Senior Director, Associate/Assistant CNO, VP of Nursing, or CNO). Step-up candidates encouraged.
Collaborative, accountable leadership style suited to a small, close-knit hospital; excellent communicator.
NY or highly regulated state experience, Joint Commission survey experience, Critical Access / rural background, and unionized-workforce experience are advantageous.
